The best babysitter: a German shepherd takes care of orphaned fawn babies his owner finds

When you think of a German Shepherd, you probably picture a loyal, determined guard dog who would give his life to protect his master. At first glance, Sarge may look the same, but his owner’s habit of rescuing animals has revealed a much softer side to the dog.

“We live on a small farm in Ohio, but we don’t raise animals for food. We raise them, love them and care for them like our own children. I have two sons and they love animals too,” the woman explained.

“We brought Sarge home nine years ago.”

It turns out the dog wasn’t always a gentle giant: “Sarge was a vicious pup and liked to bite our toes and terrorize children and guests who visited our house.”

But six years ago, a different side of the dog emerged when Cheryl rescued her first fawn.

“A friend of our family found a fawn lying in the middle of the road. He knew we loved animals and offered to help the poor guy.”

From the moment the fawn came to the Stevens’ house, Sarge became its real babysitter and devoted protector.

But fawns and dogs are not the only animals that live on the Stevens’ farm.

“We have a rooster named Big Roo, a chicken, a horse and a pony. And recently we brought home a little black sheep and a baby goat.”

“Besides Sarge, we have a dog named Brownie, Doodle, Dingo and Scruncher. But it’s Sarge who has such a soft spot for fawns.”
