There are few things more heartbreaking than an abandoned pet. When people adopt a dog and then have no way or even just no desire to take care of the animal anymore, they just leave it to die.
Many of these animals live on the streets as best they can until they are either rescued or die of starvation, disease and injury. In a few beautiful cases, however, such an animal can slowly recover with the help of animal welfare workers.
Few stray dogs are as lucky as Hercules in this regard. Shortly before Christmas, in the big city of Buenos Aires in Argentina, Hercules was discovered by a passerby.
Pia, as the animal lover is called, found the little dog emaciated to the bone and with open wounds on the street and could not simply walk past him and leave him to his fate. Pia took the dog to a veterinarian.
“He had no glow in his eyes. He had already given up,” Pia recounted. The doctors at Animal Rescue for Dogs told her that Hercules would only survive the next few days if he received around-the-clock care and attention. So Pia set to work.
It was a difficult time. The first two days Hercules would not eat and kept losing weight.Pia kept an eye on him all the time, waiting for a miracle to happen. And it happened, the dog was slowly recovering!. Towards the end of that day, he was even able to carefully pick himself up and stand on his own two feet.
From then on, things slowly went uphill. Pia nursed and cared for Hercules so lovingly that he recovered bit by bit from his exertions. Little by little he became stronger, livelier and more active. His fur grew back and his face showed a happy dog smile.
Pia actually planned to place him with a good family who would adopt him through the Animal Rescue for Dogs. But soon she realized she never wanted to give him up. The two had simply become inseparable.
No wonder, he will never forget that she not only saved his life with her care, but also gave him back the joy of it. What a wonderful team the two of them make.
