Dog was bored at the shelter: he was adopted, but the police came to the owners

Detroit Dog Rescue volunteers received a call about a dog without a collar or leash sitting in a vacant lot in the city. They drove to the address and found the animal there. The dog was surprisingly friendly and approached people joyfully.

At the shelter, the dog was vaccinated and placed in an enclosure. Month after month passed, but there was no one willing to adopt this dog. Everyone was frightened by his face and did not want to listen to the stories of the volunteers. But they were delighted by the dog’s friendliness and sociability.

Dan Tillery and his girlfriend lived just an hour away from the shelter. They saw the dog on the shelter’s social media page, read his sad story and decided to take the “good boy.” The dog was nicknamed Diggy.

The “terrible” smile of the dog has become his cuteness, which made her insanely popular on Instagram. People sent each other photos of Dan and Diggy. The dog grew an army of fans and everyone was happy.

But someone was in big trouble. One day the police knocked on the door. It was a complete shock for him, as he had done nothing wrong – at least he knew nothing about it. The police told him that he had broken the law and that there would be consequences.

Law enforcement said Diggy was a pit bull and that breed was banned in Waterford Township. That rule has been in effect in the township since 1990. This means that Dan and his girlfriend broke the law when they took Diggy home. The reason is that pit bulls are notoriously dangerous and aggressive.

Dan had two options. One: He surrendered his dog. Two: He took the consequences and went to court. He chose the second. He loved Diggy as part of his family, and there was no way he was going to let a stupid law get in the way of that.

The man had to pay $500. But that’s where Dan’s girlfriend came in. She presented documentation from the shelter that Diggy was not a pit bull, but…. an American bulldog. And that’s not all. The girl drafted the petition in which she wrote that because of negligent owners who didn’t train dogs well, the whole breed goes on the list of aggressive dogs. And that the law should punish the owners, not their pets, and certainly not the entire breed.

Hundreds of pet owners showed up at Waterford Town Hall in one day. They staged a protest that paid off – the law banning pit bulls in that city was repealed. So a stray dog helped change the law.
