The whale swallowed the lobster catcher: the man survived and gave an interview

The man felt a strong push and everything around him went dark

A 56-year-old man named Michael Packard was fishing for lobster off the coast of Massachusetts when he was swallowed by a humpback whale.

The man spent 30-40 seconds in its mouth before the animal spat him out.

The man has been fishing for lobsters for 40 years. To do this, he dives into the water and retrieves them from the sandy bottom. The incident occurred on June 11 off the coast of Provincetown. The man said he was diving and felt a strong jolt underwater, after which everything went dark.

“I felt that I could move and that the animal was squeezing the muscles of the mouth,” said the diver, adding that for a second he thought about death.

At first, Michael thought he was inside a great white shark, but noticed there were no teeth. Then he realized that he had been swallowed by a whale.

The man tried to hit the whale from the inside and suddenly the animal shook its head and spat him out. Michael calculated that he was in the whale’s mouth for 30-40 seconds. He made it to the boat on his own.

The diver was not seriously injured. Zoologists said that such a case is rare. Humpback whales usually leave people alone. Probably, the animal together with the diver grabbed prey with its mouth.
