A fox named Woody was found on the side of the road. The foundling went into good hands with Geoff Grewcock, the owner of a private animal welfare service in Naniton and Warwickshire.
Since retiring in 2001, the former janitor had turned his property into an animal shelter and helped 62,000 animals in just under 11 years, all paid for out of his pension.
The fox had a slim chance of survival, but Jeff managed to get him out. He fed the fox every two hours and even got up at night.
When Woody found himself in the company of Orla the greyhound and Bramble the domestic deer, he wanted to live. The fox cub is now completely healthy, except for blindness, which will remain for the rest of his life. According to Jeff, this is a unique critter that thinks it is a dog. This often happens with babies raised by animals of a different species.
The parents may have abandoned the cub because it couldn’t see well – according to the vet, the fox is 90% blind. He will no longer be able to live in the wild, so Woody will forever remain a “pet” fox.
To make the new pet feel comfortable, the Briton worked on the safety of the house, removing all obstacles and dangerous objects from it.
Now the fox runs freely through the rooms with his friends Bramble and Orla, sleeps with them in his arms and eats with them from the same bowl. He is so used to acting like a dog that people often mistake him for a dog on walks and ask what breed he is.
The fox is becoming a real beauty and attracts the attention not only of passers-by, but also of motorists who stop the car to ask Jeff a few questions about the unusual pet.
