A girl took in a stray puppy and gave it a home, unaware that she herself would need help

Birgitte Kallestad was known among her friends as a cheerful, outgoing girl with a proactive attitude. She was also an animal lover, which led her to her cruel fate.

In February last year, a girl, and she was only 24 years old, went on vacation with friends. They decided to visit the Philippines, where during one of their walks they came across a small stray puppy. No big deal, these countries are full of them and no one can help them all, but Birgitta’s heart decided otherwise.

No, the girl was sensible enough not to fall into foolishness. The puppy was washed, fed, the wounds were treated, and then he found a local shelter where he was safely delivered. The girl spent a few days with the dog and it was no problem. A few scratches and a careless bite didn’t count – this is also a baby, not used to people. A band-aid would do the trick.

The records clearly state – the diagnosis was made on May 4, 2019. A few weeks earlier, Birgitta had gone to the doctor with several complaints, which left the medics baffled. An examination would later completely exonerate them, as it turned out that this was the first case of a human rabies virus in Norway in 200 years! No wonder no one was able to immediately recognize the problem.

Birgitta Kallestad passed away on May 6, 2019, just two days after her diagnosis. And that makes sense – there is no cure for rabies, and when the symptoms start, that is already a sign of finality. Yes, modern medicine can deal with this contagion, but on the condition that treatment is started immediately after infection. And the good-natured and carefree Birgitta was on the road for a long time after the rescue of the puppy, not suspecting anything until it was too late.

This news should be a warning for all people, not only for tourists and animal lovers. The disease rabies is widespread in 120 countries of the world and can be transmitted even by a scratch or a few drops of saliva. And it’s not just puppies and kittens that carry it. Birgitta didn’t want to die, she just wanted to help a living soul. Be careful and take care of yourself.
